Castle CombeWiltshire and the Southern Cotswolds is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty yet it remains largely undiscovered and has a wealth of interesting tracks and footpaths. The chalk Wiltshire Downs are a haven for wild life and endemic flora. The Downs enable the walker to experience breathtaking Wiltshire scenery whilst the villages with their thatched roofs and warm stone walls are a pleasure to see.

This short weekend break of walks will enable you to see some of the historic and interesting countryside of this delightful part of Wiltshire Cotswolds. You will have the opportunity to visit the famous village Castle Combe, which has been featured in the film Doctor Doolittle.The famous Westbury White Horse sits on the side of the Wiltshire Downs and an exhilarating walk takes you to it's very presence.

Your accommodation will be at the 3 star Leigh Park Hotel which is located on the outskirts of the historic market town of Bradford on Avon, within walking distance of this interesting town. It is nine miles from the City of Bath.

Your Programme

 

Day 1: Arrive Friday.

Day 2: Saturday: Westbury White Horse (7.5mls/12kms)

This exhilarating down land walk takes you to the famous White Horse of Westbury on the western edge of Salisbury Plain. The views are tremendous, with the scarp slope dropping into the Vale of Pewsey. You walk over the chalk downs, through woodland and across pasture land leading you back to the White Horse and Bratton camp and the iron age hill fort.

Day 3: Sunday: Castle Combe (E:6mls/10kms)

We leave the village of Castle Combe and walk to join the MacMillan Way, which winds itself along the side of the By Brook. Our route then takes us into open countryside to the village of West Kington and across meadows and through woodland back into the village of Castle Combe.

Day 4: Monday: Bradford on Avon - Iford (E:7mls/11kms)

This pleasant circular walk, begins in Bradford on Avon and takes you along part of the Kennet and Avon canal. You continue across pastureland, beside the River Avon, to the village of Freshford. Joining the River Frome you make your way to Iford and onto the village of Westwood before rejoining the canal back to Bradford on Avon. You will have time to visit the 14c Tithe Barn and the 6c Saxon Church in the beautiful historic market town of Bradford on Avon.

Depart after walk or stay an extra night.
