Exmoor Wanderer
This walking holiday will give you the opportunity to explore part of the contrasting countryside of the Exmoor National Park with its deep wooded combes, farmland, grass and heather moors as well as the magnificent coastline. The National Park comprises 267 square miles of which two-thirds lies in West Somerset and one third in North Devon. On our walks we will look for red deer and exmoor ponies that roam the moor.
Your accommodation for this holiday will be spent at the Simonsbath House Hotel, dating back to 1654 in the quiet village of Simonsbath with lovely views over the River Barle and the distant moors. This location provides a wonderful setting for walkers who wish to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the English Countryside.
Your Programme
Day 1: Arrive
Day 2: Lynmouth - Watersmeet (E:6mls/10kms)
This walk takes you through the National Trust owned,beautiful steep sided wooded valley of the East Lyn and Hoaroak Water. You start at the coastal village of Lynmouth and the route takes you along side the East Lyn to Watersmeet, here there is an interesting 19th century hunting lodge. We then continue to make our way up into the woodland and follow the path back to Lynmouth.
Day 3: Withypool and Tarr Steps (E:8Mls/13Kms)
This well-known walk along the River Barle to Tarr Steps starts at the village of Withypool. The walk takes us along some of the loveliest stretches of the river. We cross over the medieval clapper bridge of Tarr Steps and make our way onto Withypool Common. We cross the common and return back to the village.
Day 4:Haddon Hill - Wimbleball Lake (M:6.5mls / 10.4kms)
We start this walk at Wimbleball Reservoir with beautiful views across the lake and make our way to the summit of Haddon Hill. We then descend through woodland into the lovely Haddeo valley at Bury and the route continues along the river valley through more woodland back to the start point.
Day 5: Dunkery Beacon- Horner-Porlock (E:7.5mls/12kms)
This linear walk starts at Webbers Post and leads us to the top of Dunkery Beacon which at 519m is the highest point on Exmoor. We follow the moorland ridge until it dips down into Bagley Combe. The route continues along the East Water valley through woodland to the village of Horner and onto Porlock.
