The Mendips
The Mendips is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Somerset which stretches from the market town of Frome in the East to the Bristol Channel in the West. This area encompasses some of Somerset’s most attractive and varied landscape, from the limestone summits of the Mendip Hills to the pastureland of the Somerset Levels. The area offers the walker a variety of walking country, which still remains to be discovered by many people. The walking holidays in the Mendips give you the opportunity to explore this interesting area visiting such places as Wells, the smallest city in England.
This self guided holiday on the Eastern side of the Mendips gives you the opportunity to discover this attractive area which is full of history and beautiful countryside.You can visit the conservation village of Mells, where legend has it that the nursery rhyme ‘little Jack Horner’ was derived. The walks take you from the start of the Mendip Hills ending with your final walk starting from the city of Wells.
You will be centre based staying at the Centurion Hote, a three star Best Western hotel with leisure facilities, including a swimming pool and sauna. It is situated 11 miles from the City of Bath and is ideal base to explore the area.

Your Programme
Day 1: Arrive
Day 2: The Nursery Rhyme Walk (M:9.5mls/15kms)
This circular walk takes you from the village of Mells across open farmland and through woodland of the Babington House estate and onto Kilmersdon, another attractive Somerset village where the nursery rhyme Jack and Jill is reputed to be based.
Day 3: The Castle Walk (M: 9mls/14.4kms)
From Mells village you head through the wooded Wadbury Valley stream towards Great Elm and then onto Murder Combe.You continue across open meadows and into Nunney. Here you will find an impressive 14th century fortified manor house surrounded by a moat. On your return journey you pass historic Railford ironworks and back to the village of Mells.
Day 4: Chilcompton to Wookey Hole (M:9.5mls/15kms)
From the village of Chilcompton you head across the Mendip Hills to the village of Chewton Mendip, before join joining the Monarchs Way. You then head along the Mendip escarpment with the wonderful views of Glastonbury Tor rising from the Somerset Levels. The walk then takes you down into the village of Wookey Hole.(transport is provided to the start and from the finish of this walk.
Day 5: Wells to Ebbor Gorge (M: 9mls/14kms)
This walk takes you up from Wells through Biddle Combe and onto Pen Hill and the Mendips. You walk across the plateau,with wonderful views of the Somerset Levels, to the Ebbor Gorge Nature Reserve and make our way back to finish at Wells Cathedral.
