Lorna Doone Country
Exmoor National Park comprises 267 square miles of which two thirds lies in West Somerset and one third in North Devon. Our walking holidays will give you the opportunity to explore the contrasting countryside with its deep wooded coombs,farmland, grass and heather moors as well as the magnificent coastline. The walks take you along parts of the South West Coastal Path, Two Moors Way and Lorna Doone Valley.You look for Red Deer and Exmoor ponies that roam the moors.
On the 'Lorna Doone Country' self guided walking holiday you visit the magnificent Valley of the Rocks with wonderful views across the Bristol Channel to the Welsh coast as well as the Lorna Doone Valley, made famous by the author R.D.Blackmore, and also Oare Church where in the novel Lorna Doone was shot.
Your accommodation for this holiday will be at the Simonsbath House Hotel in the tranquil village of Simonsbath, 10 miles from Lynmouth and an ideal location for walkers.
Your Programme
Day 1: Arrive
Day 2: Valley of the Rocks (M: 10mls/16kms)
From Lynton the path takes you along the coast and through the scenic wonder of the Valley of the Rocks. The route then takes you inland across the moor and then follows Hoaroak Water through woodland to meet the East Lyn at Watersmeet. You then continue back to Lynmouth and we return by Cliff Railway to Lynton.
Day 3: Brendon - Malmsmead Hill (M:9mls/14Kms)
The walk starts from Dry Bridge. This walk has the contrast of the wooded valley of the East Lyn River and open moorland and the climb to County Gate and Cranscombe. You cross open moorland with wonderful views.
Day 4: Exford - Winsford (12Mls/ 19.2km)
Your walk takes you south from Exford to follow the River Exe to Winsford. You then climb Winsford Hill with views over the Punchbowl. Your route then takes you across the moor to Room Hill before you return back to Exford.
Day 5: Lorna Doone Country-Malmsmead- Badgworthy Valley (M: 8 Miles/ 13Kms)
This walk explores the valley of Badgworthy Water. It offers outstanding walking through rock-strewn streams, bracken covered combes and open moorland whilst also visiting Oare Church where in the novel Lorna Doone was shot.
