Village of Mells
A short break walking holiday centred on the Somerset conservation village of Mells. This break will enable you to relax and enjoy the beauty and peace of the English countryside. Mells is situated three miles west of the market town of Frome. The lovely setting of the village and the unusually large number of listed buildings have resulted in a large part of the area being designated as a conservation area.
You accommodation for this holiday will be at the Talbot Inn, a 15th century coaching inn that is highly commended for its food and it's accommodation.
Note: It is possible to stay extra nights at Mells if you wish. Nearby towns and cities worth a visit include Bath, Bristol, Cheddar, Glastonbury and Wells.

Day
1: Arrive at
Mells
Time to stroll round this attractive village. The lovely setting of the village
and the unusually large number of listed buildings has resulted in a large
part of the village being designated as a Conservation Area.
Day 2: The Nursery Rhyme Walk (9.5mls/15kms)
This circular
walk takes you from Mells where allegedly the English nursery rhyme Little
Jack Horner was derived. Your route takes you across open farmland and
through woodland of the Babington House estate and onto Kilmersdon another
attractive Somerset village where the nursery rhyme Jack and Jill
is reputed to be based. On leaving the village of Kilmersdon the walk takes
you along a beautiful valley stream and onwards back to Mells.
Note: This walk can be shortened to 7 miles if desired.
Day 3: The River Valley Walk (9mls/14kms)
A
most attractive and tranquil walk along the Mells stream wooded valley. Leaving
Mells village you walk through the floral carpeted woodland along the side
of the river where wild ducks play and kingfishers dart. Passing the old Fussell
Iron Works where farm implements were made over two hundred years ago you
continue to Great Elm and along the valley to the outskirts of the market
town of Frome. You return along the Mells stream valley passing the remains
of the Murtry Aqueduct, which carried the branch line of the Dorset and Somerset
canal to Mells village.

Day 4: The Castle Walk (8.5mls/13.6kms)
From Mells village you head through the wooded Wadbury Valley stream towards Great Elm. You continue across open meadows with interesting varieties of flora and onto Nunney.Here you will find an impressive 14th century fortified manor house surrounded by a moat. The centre of Nunney is a conservation area and contains many picturesque cottages. You continue past Railford Works and back to the village of Mells.
