The Mendip Hills

The Mendip Hills is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Somerset which stretches from the market town of Frome in the east to the Bristol Channel in the west. This area encompasses some of Somerset’s most attractive and varied landscape, from the limestone summits of the Mendip Hills to the pastureland of the Somerset Levels. This area offers the walker a variety of walking country, which still remains to be discovered by many people. The walking holidays in the Mendips give you the opportunity to explore this interesting area visiting such places as Cheddar Gorge and Crook Peak.

Enjoy the beauty of this not so well known part of Somerset by taking this interesting self guided walking holiday. The walks take you onto the Mendip Hills with wonderful views of the Bristol Channel and beyond.

Your accommodation will be centre based staying at the Webbington Hotel, Loxton, a three star hotel with leisure facilities including a swimming pool, situated on the southern slopes of the Mendips.

Your Programme

Day 1: Arrive

Day 2: Cheddar Gorge (M:8.5Mls/13.5Kms)

From the bottom of the Gorge you climb steadily with wonderful views of the Somerset Levels and Glastonbury Tor in the distance. On reaching the highest point of the Gorge you then continue down through woodland to Black Rock and on through Velvet Bottom to Charterhouse. You walk across Black Down to Beacon Batch (325m) the highest point on the Mendips and return back to Cheddar.

Day 3: Bleadon Hill - Shiplake (M:6.5Mls/10.6Kms)

You start from Bleadon Hill and initially follow a track, which is part of the West Mendip Way. Your route continues over pastureland to Shiplate and onto the village of Bleadon. You then ascend Hellenge Hill and continue across fields and through woodland to Upper Canada and your start point.

Day 4: Kings Wood- Banwell - Winscombe (M:8Mls/13Kms)

From the National Trust property of Kings Wood you follow through woodland to the village of Cross and onto Wavering Down with magnificent views across the Bristol Channel. You make your way down into the village of Banwell and leave passing Banwell Castle and follow footpaths until you meet the old railway line known as the ‘Strawberry Line’.

Day 5:Webbington- Crook Peak (M:8Mls/12Kms)

This walk starts from the hotel and follows the lower contours to Compton Bishop and onto the village of Cross. You then enter woods before reaching the open space of Wavering Down, where you get 360 degree views. Crook Peak, the second highest point on the Mendips is reached, before you descend back to the hotel.

Day 6: Depart
